The Climbing for Life team will represent the Diabetes Liga, will collect funds to the benefit of diabetes and will – hopefully – inspire others with their story.
We visited Herman during the preparation of his sporty adventure.
‘I was diagnosed with Diabetes type 2 when I turned 39’, Herman explains. ‘With this challenge I want to suppress my own borders but I also want to demonstrate that sporty performances are perfectly achievable for people with diabetes type 1 or 2. I hope to build up a more healthy and sporty lifestyle in the long term with the support and medical guidance of Climbing for Life. I really love challenges and I want to prove that you don’t have to deny yourself anything when it comes to sports because you have diabetes. Together with my team members, I want to stimulate others to participate or to take steps towards a healthier and sportier life style. Exercise is an essential pillar in both the treatment as well as in the prevention of diabetes.’
Diabetes mellitus is worldwide a serious disease. Diabetes is on the rise: more and more people are diagnosed with this disease that causes the amount of sugar in your blood to rise. Type 1 and 2 are the most common types of diabetes. Type 1 cannot be prevented. But with type 2 there is a clear correlation with an unhealthy life style and obesities, next to factors such as genetic predisposition and age.
We follow ‘our’ hero of the Stelvio during his bike adventure. Would you like to participate yourself and draw the attention to diabetes? Or do you want to support Climbing for Life? You can find more information on www.climbingforlife.be and on www.diabetes.be, and support Herman.
Climbing of the Stelvio in the wake of Herman Briké
Our colleague Herman Briké took on the ambassadorship of Climbing for Life 2019 at the start of this year. Climbing for Life wants to draw attention to diabetes and wants to stimulate people towards more healthy movement. In the upcoming months, a team of diabetes patients is prepared under medical supervision to climb the Passo Dello Selvio by bike in June.
